On August 3rd, Xtreme Fighting Championships will be headed to the hometown of “The NatureBoy” Rick Flair, for their first ever event in Charlotte, North Carolina. The promotion is bringing a full line-up of stars for the event, which will be one of the best cards in North Carolina history. The feature bout of the card will be a lightweight match between David Mays and the ever-inspirational undefeated XFC star “Notorious” Nick Newell.
Mays has been fighting in the regions local promotions since 2009 and has compiled a record of 6 wins and 3 losses. Standing just 5’6’’ tall, Mays’ compact stature carries a ton of power; the same power responsible for beating 4 of his opponents into submission. He has also been able to secure a first round victory by RNC, and most recently a split decision win. As Mays looks to group together a streak of wins, he will have to get through an undefeated Nick Newell.
Nick Newell has become one of the most inspirational stories in MMA, going 7-0 including his 2 most recent victories in the XFC cage. Newell made national news in the MMA world with his HDNet (now AXS.tv) debut win over Dennis Hernandez at XFC 15 and then again, in an ESPN TOP10 worthy performance over Chris Coggins at XFC 17. Although a perfect 7-0 record is impressive on its own, interest around Newell is multiplied by the fact that he has done it with only one half of his left arm. Born with congenital amputation, Newell’s left arm ends just inches past his elbow, something that could throw off the game plan for Mays.
Newell so far has been able to adapt to his unique situation and use his wrestling background and Jiu-jitsu to earn victories. In his last fight against Chris Coggins, Newell nearly tasted defeat in the second round when he was just seconds away from being choked unconscious. Newell survived the round and ended up winning a decision, taking the first and third rounds. Mays will bring an aggressive, fast paced stand up game that will test Newell’s ability to defend against a strong striker. The same aggressive style could also send Mays home with a first round loss should Newell be able to secure a take down and first round submission, as he has done on 5 other occasions.
Watch David Mays & “Notorious” Nick Newell meet under the lights in an XFC Lightweight war on August 3rd from the Grady Cole Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. XFC 19: Charlotte Showdown is presented by ICRealTime Security Solutions and airs live on AXS TV. To purchase tickets or for more information on the event, visit www.OffficialXFC.com.
